The best part of camping smells are the best meals prepared on camp stoves or over an open fire. “Ah,” the fabulous outdoors just brings out the best in food. One of my favorite meals is “Hobo Dinner,” which is potatoes, onions, carrots, hamburger or chicken placed in aluminum foil and then tossed on a fire. That seems to be one of the repeat meals that my family shares at our favorite campground every summer.

There is nothing like cooking or eating a fantastic meal with beautiful surroundings as your backdrop. The sunset reflecting through the trees or off a lake at the evening campfire where you spend time laughing and enjoying each others company. What drives you to return to the outdoors year in and year out? It might be the mysterious echo of the loon that brings a sense of peace or maybe the picturesque scenery that beckons you back to the wild. Whatever stimulates your senses, it is the meals that you fix that create memorable experiences and joy of being outdoors.

The cold weather seems to continue to be persistent. What better time to start thinking about your next family camping trip to your favorite campground. Start planning your favorite meals that you will develop and cook on outstanding portable stove or open flames. What better way to enjoy standard car camping or large group camping. The glorious outdoors are calling you and your adventurous people to have fun with friends and family and cooking up a sumptuous meal.

Now days there are stoves that offer portability, easy cleaning, reliability, and convenience for cooking. Thus, the stoves give you the necessary tools to cook up your favorite meals. The camping stove unfolds simply to expose (Newsletters 2007) 2 or 3 burners, with the lid forming a windscreen at the back, and windscreens to the sides. Great features to help cut down fuel consumption when exposed.

I want to share with you a story about one of my first backpacking trips with my dad, and some of the gear we used and what we learned. Some of the gear has improved vastly over the years and some of you will relate to what we did and some of you, I hope, will chuckle.

My father and I were planning a pack trip to Sitting Bull Falls, N.M.. I was 10 at the time and it was my first backpacking trip, so dad had planned an easy trek of about 5 miles from the car to the falls. we stayed up late the day before packing our gear and going over the list we had made. Now remember this is my first packing trip, and dad had not been backpacking several years but he had gone before, not a novice  but not grizzly adams either. We must have loaded  and unloaded the packs 4-5 times that night trying to get what we thought we would need for the 3 day weekend in the foothills of New Mexico.

We loaded up before the crack of dawn the next morning and drove the hour and a half from where we lived in Texas to the trail head. We unloaded our gear help each other put the packs on, mine felt like it wieghed 900 lbs, and began the hike in to where we were going to set up camp. The hour long hike took us about 2 hours, being 10 I need to rest every now and then. As we began to set up camp we noticed that the sun began to fade as clouds began to build overhead. This could not be good.

We started looking for firewood in hopes we could get a hot lunch before everything was to wet, not to be as soon as we we got back with an armload of wood the skyes opened up and it began to rain, well pour wold be a better description of what was happening.  As for lunch, it consisted of granola bars, Summer sausage and cheese ( a staple in my pack to this day!) We eat in the tent a two man tent with absolutely no room. This was turning out to be a miserable trip.

Well it rained all day, but as night fell it stopped. Thank god, we might get a chance to dry out. Dry out we did the wind blew, must have been a 30-40 mph wind all night long. The tent did not fare well, it fell on us 3 times during the night, remember we did not get much sleep the night before packing ( a lesson well learned). With our camp in shambles (Mother Nature it seems did not want us in her woods that day) we began to clean up, build a fire, an experience as all the wood was wet. and set about getting some breakfast in our stomachs.

After breakfast we discussed our staying, as everything we had was wet or had been strewn around the mountains by the wind. Well we stayed, for a few hours. The wind returned, have you ever tried to pack a campsite in 20 to 30 mph winds?

Camping

Going camping is one of my families great pleasures. We camp three to four times a year at various camp grounds near our home. We even have a weekend camp out in the backyard every summer. Camping is a great way to unplug the kids and introduce them to nature as well as get away from the stress of work and everyday life. The look of dismay and annoyance on the kids faces when we inform them that for one whole week they will not have any TV, cell phones, or video games always brings a smile to my face. What warms my heart more is when the kids realize that the “real world” can be just as much fun. The creativity that flows from them as they invent new games with the other kids around us in the camp grounds is awesome. The look on their face when the catch a fish, the absolute joy they feel when the fiddler crab they caught won the race. The kids have just forgot that TV even exsists.

One thing to consider when taking the family camping is the tent. You will need a tent big enough to sleep all members of your group comfortably. For instance I have a family of 5, but we have a 7 man tent. We all fit with room to spare, we have space to store our gear to keep it dry. You should also consider what kind of weather you will be encountering. Will your tent handle the worst mother nature throws at you? Consider how the frame of the tent is contructed as well as the base. How many stakes are needed to hold the tent down. Always carry a few extra. What condition are the tents ropes

in. And you must also consider weight, how far do you have to carry the tent, maybe a couple of smaller tents are what you need.

Just a few things to consider, I hope this article finds you ready to go camping.
